To Be A Child

There is a longing in all of us to be a child again.

Because our childhood represents a time of happiness, being carefree, feeling protected and having no fear of the future.

When we were children we embraced new people and other children with complete trust.

We expected to live forever and that everyone else would too. We had no understanding of death.

We were happy with the simplest of things, like a pile of sand, a rope swing or an old cardboard box that we played with all day.

We believed that we could accomplish anything, that anything was possible, and we feared nothing except the darkness.

We took the time to enjoy other children, smell the flowers, lay on the ground and marvel at a deep blue sky, feel the warm breeze blow against our faces and listen to the birds sing.

But somewhere, as we grew older, someone stole the knowledge that we can still be children.

They made us forget that we can be happy and carefree, that we have someone who will hold our hand, protect us from anything – including the darkness, and that we don’t have to fear the future.

They have stolen our open child-like trust, replacing it with fear. Not only of other people but in some cases even our own children.

They have also stolen the knowledge that we, and all of our friends can live forever, that we’re supposed to live forever, and that we shouldn’t fear death.

They have taken away our happiness with simple, inexpensive things and led us to believe that instead, we must rely on the short-lived happiness of expensive indulgences. We have forgotten that less can be more.

They have stolen the knowledge that we can accomplish anything we want to do and that no power on earth can stop us.

They have caused us to become so involved in careers and other unimportant nonsense that we don’t have the time to smell the flowers, lay on the ground and look at the sky, feel the warm breeze blow on our faces or listen to the birds sing. We don’t even have the time to love and enjoy our own children.

But it’s time to remember that we are still children – God’s children. And He loves us and will protect us from anything in a way our earthly fathers never could.

It’s time to remember that we should still trust and enjoy other people no matter where they come from or what they look like.

It’s time to remember that we, and all of our friends CAN live forever, that we’re supposed to live forever, and that we should have no fear of death.

It’s time to remember that real happiness comes from simple things like the laughter of a child, a genuine loving hug from a friend, or a hug from our Father.

It’s time to remember that absolutely nothing can stop us. That we can accomplish anything we want to do.

It’s time to give up the unimportant nonsense so we’ll have the time to smell the flowers, look at the sky, feel the warm breeze blow on our faces, listen to the birds sing and remember that our Father made them just for us. It’s time to love our own children and watch them grow.

It’s time to sit in our Father’s lap and to let Him love us. God somehow separates the loving child he made us to be from the junk that’s in our lives and He loves us with an intensity that is beyond our comprehension. We can identify with the fact that it’s easy to hug and love a dirty child when they put their arms around your neck but it’s not so easy to hug and love one that pushes away in rebellion.

We wish with all of our hearts to be children again, when in fact, all of the things that we miss so much and want to experience again are there just for the asking. All of the things that we treasure and long for can be ours if we will only come to our Father and ask. Through His Son, Jesus Christ, all of these things are provided to us. The only thing that remains between being a child of God and the happiness that is in Him is the “junk” in your life. Sin. God the Father has provided a plan to eliminate that barrier. Because of His love for us, He sacrificed His own child, Jesus.

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:37-39)

If you don’t know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, simply ask Him to come into your life.

Heavenly Father. I know that I am a sinner and I’m sorry. Please forgive me and let your precious blood, that was shed for me, cover my sins. I know that you died on the cross and were resurrected to sit at the right hand of God’s throne. I know God poured His wrath out on you instead of me, and I ask you now to speak to my heart and change my life. Make me a new creature. Make me one of your children. In Jesus’ precious and Holy name I pray – Amen.

If you sincerely prayed this prayer, you now have all of the things and assurances that a child of God has. He will bless you in ways you will find hard to believe. Please seek a Bible teaching church where you can grow and be with other children. May God bless you.
